Title :  ‘Oak Tree Waymarker’

Location :  Aycliffe Way, Newton Aycliffe, 1998

Materials :  Green Oak

Description :  Sited at a junction of paths in an oak wood, this signpost uses the natural form of an oak tree which was felled  and planked with part of one heavy branch still attached. Four heavy boards were obtained from the tree – cut on a horizontal bandsaw – so that the same profile is echoed on all four sides of the waymarker. The faces of the boards were carved with a variety of sayings or proverbs about oaks while the outstretched limbs contain the directions.
