Title:
Middleton Totem
Location:
Middleton-in-Teesdale Primary School
Co.
Materials: Pitch Pine, Steel
Description: In workshops held within the school, Yr 5 pupils carved surface designs into A4 pine panels which were eventually clad to the wide sides of a very large recycled Pitch Pine beam (its narrower sides carved by the artist). Standing 3 metres tall when set in the ground, the ‘totem’ pole was then topped by a steel image of birds building a nest, together with silhouetted egg and fledgling – symbolising the nurture and care that goes into the primary education of young children.
