Title:  ‘Poppies’ Memorial

Location:  Sunniside, Co Durham, 2000

Materials:  Green Elterwater Slate

Description:  This contemporary war memorial was commissioned by a tiny village to be erected in a new millennium garden. The 1.5 m tall vertical stone is carved with the universally recognised symbol of poppies, swaying against a  setting sun, while the long horizontal stone is carved to either side with an uncoiled strand of barbed wire and the evocative last lines of Laurence Binyon’s poem, “For the Fallen”.
