Title: ‘Aycliffe
Angels’
Location: Newton
Aycliffe, Co Durham, 2000
Materials: Dunhouse
Buff Sandstone
Description: This
sculpture is a long awaited memorial to the ‘Aycliffe Angels’, the
hundreds of women who carried out the dangerous work in Newton
Aycliffe’s huge complex of munitions factories during the war. The
life size sculpture portrays two women in their 1940’s working
dress, one, a supervisor, listening to the concerns of a younger
shop floor worker as she reads a letter from the battlefield. The
unveiling was attended by dozens of former ‘Angels’, delighted with
the belated recognition.
