Title:   Kay Memorial

Location:

Materials:  Dunhouse Grey Sandstone

Description:  This carefully selected tapering block of bi-coloured stone, with a naturally riven back and edges, gave the starting point for the design and layout of the text. The upper part of the lettering ends right on the edge of the colour change in the stone, while the upward curving line of the strata is echoed in the direction of the two lines of ‘footprints’ emanating from the words below.

These continue around the sawn right hand edge, becoming increasingly frequent and convergent, and underlining more words carved into the side, before disappearing into the roughness of the back – then reappearing in the form of a pair of swallows swooping upward across the stone.
