Title:  ‘Meander Seats’

Location:  Riverside, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham, 1996

Materials:  Elm

Description: A pair of benches, made from a single, massive curved trunk of Elm, refer to the River Wear’s course as it loops around them. Words carved into the leading edge of the back rail are taken from a textbook :

In the lower part of a river’s course, as it flows around a bend, the current erodes the outside bank”  on the convex seat, and “ Silt gathers on the inner bank where the water slows & in time a slight curve may become a meander”

on the concave.
