Title:
Roman Legionary
Location:
Lanchester , Co
Durham, 2008
Materials:
Buff sandstone
Description:
Commissioned to mark the opening of a new ‘Looking for Romans’
circular path around the small town of Lanchester, which has origins
as a Roman fort sited on the road between York and Hadrian’s Wall.
The full sized figure incised into the stone depicts a fearsome but
tired looking legionary, with his heavy pack and array of weapons,
marching northward to the wild border country. The carving is picked
out in Roman Red stone paint for clarity.
