Title:
Grange Villa Entrances
Location:
Grange Villa, Co
Durham, 1999
Materials:
Cedar, Marine Plywood
Description:
This pair of wooden welcome signs are similar in format but deal
with separate aspects of village history and life. One centres on
the symbol of a miner’s lamp, with the carved diagonals of coal tub
handle and pick shaft on one side echoed by the incised wires and
structure of the winding gear opposite. The other refers to three
important leisure-time activities – allotment gardening, poultry
keeping and pigeon racing. Beneath each are small wooden panels
carved by youngsters from the local youth club.
